Released by W. W. Norton in 2016, Of Poetry & Protest is an anthology of African American poetry. This book seeks to bring spotlight to the often overlooked talents of Black Poets and allow broader understanding of their work. Included are Pulitzer Prize-winning poets Rita Dove, Natasha Trethewey, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Tracy K. Smith, as well as the work of other luminaries such as Elizabeth Alexander, Ishmael Reed, Nikki Giovanni, and Sonia Sanchez. Once published, this stunning work will open considerably more venues for publication of and scholarship on Black American poetry and poetics.
The design and layout is a collaboration between renowned graphic designer, Bob Ciano, and Maystorm Studio. Anthologies tend to be visually monotonous. To overcome this risk, we eschewed reoccurring page templates and crafted each poet profile independently and also as part of a cohesive whole. The forty-four featured poets (and their poetry) are the central focus in this book. We went for a clean, elegant look, and gave the portraits a generous amount of page real estate to make sure the design wouldn't get in the way.
